The factors that construct the Earth’s environment are diverse and related to each other in a complex manner. However, modern scientific technologies have been developed on the direction of specialization and subdivision, and it is difficult to share the data and information among different fields.
We categorize the various datasets in DIAS based on the fields and creation methods so that it is possible to browse the entire datasets. As a result, we can achieve the interoperability of data and information increases, and increase the compatibility of data and information between different fields.
We also provide keyword-based and spatiotemporal-based searches using metadata. To develop cross-searches on various existing databases, we will accumulate information related to database implementation.

Status of Data Release

Beginning in October 2010, we published our datasets and their documentation and metadata (in English and Japanese). This system is available for anyone to browse and search the data on the Internet at Furthermore, after registering and agreeing to the terms and conditions, users can also download the data. As of March 2019, there are 276 datasets available for download. (Some datasets require application in order to download the data.)

Catalog Search

In general, the catalog search in data centers is divided based on specified spatiotemporal, place, or keyword, into dynamic groups by categories, to filter the search results based on the attribute values (include or exclude) that users take for the datasets. Such faceted search methodologies have been widely used.

To promote interdisciplinary data use, by specifying GCMD science keyword, GEOSS societal benefit area, GCMD platform as the axis, we show the distribution of datasets as a matrix.

With the increasing amount of published datasets, faceted search by adding axes that provide different points of view to the matrix, cell selection, and ranking of the search results are important for interdisciplinary dataset search.
For this purpose, it is necessary to record the characteristics of the datasets from various aspects.
In future, we plan to improve the function of recording large numbers of attributes as metadata. We also plan to improve the function of data download.

Cooperation among Data Centers

We are cooperating with existing organizations and projects that create and manage metadata. We are developing functions for cross-searching metadata from DIAS and existing metadata from others. As of March 2019, it is possible to cross-search the metadata from JAMSTEC Data Catalog, JaLTER Data Catalog, NIPR Science Database, and NIPR Arctic Data archive System.
